Blog #5: Web 2.0 & Blogging

These past two weeks, I have been tossed into the world of social bookmarking! At first, Diigo was incredibly frustrating to use, but after a little bit of practice, I really enjoy using it! I have to write a lot of essays that use sources from online, and it's annoying having to copy, paste, revise, and try to remember which source my information came from. With Diigo, I can highlight and annotate right on the page so I can reference the work and my original thoughts later. And, if I have to do a group project, this would also be super helpful when finding and analyzing sources. I think I'm going to be using Diigo in the future!
I have really enjoyed blogging so far! I like to journal and write about what's going on, so writing about things I'm learning in class has been relatively easy. However, I don't necessarily enjoy some of the topics I have to write about. They tend to be very specific at times, and then I feel like I can't write fully about what I'm passionate about or what I'm thinking about the subject. I have learned that forcing myself to sit down and write has been good for me and has solidified what I'm learning in class. It's also nice to look back and see what I have learned.
In class, we have also been learning about Web 2.0, basically a more interactive version of Web 1.0. One Web 2.0 tool I would have my students use is Grammarly. Grammarly is basically a source that checks students grammar, spelling, and more. There is an extension that can be downloaded to Google Chrome (in fact, I have one on now, and it's catching me every time I mistype something!) and you can create a free account. Not only does Grammarly improve the peer review process, but it helps educate students on proper grammar. 10/10 would recommend Grammarly to fellow hopeful English teachers.
That's all for this week! Hope you have a great weekend, and I'll catch you again next Thursday!

Hi Callie! I've never heard of Grammarly before... i'm definitely going to have to check it out! Seems like it could be super beneficial in my life with all the writing have to do:(
ReplyDeleteI also can relate to your experience with blogging. I don't like to write about some of the topics presented but it forced me to reflect on my learning which i like.
Hey Callie, I love Grammarly! It is so convenient and helpful in writing anything. I have a bad habit of typing fast and making simple mistakes so grammarly really helps me by checking things over as I write. I never thought about using it in the classroom but this would be amazing! Students would be catching their own mistakes and learning as they write.
ReplyDeleteHi Callie! I agree that Diigo makes annotating a lot easier! I also think it would be super useful in group projects! I use Grammarly all the time to check my work when writing papers for various classes. I like how it doesn't just correct what is wrong but gives ideas about how to improve sentences throughout!
ReplyDeleteHey Callie! I've been using Grammarly for a couple of years now and it's one of the best tools out there. It is really easy for me to sometimes get lost in my writing and have grammatical errors. However, with Grammarly installed it takes the stress off!
